Call me CRAZY! The other day I posted a very long article about some doctor who gave some stats he pulled out of who knows where about eating to much protein. He referenced a few countries and spouted some statistics about how much protein they eat and how healthy they are. I wrote an opinion scattered with a few fact bombs. But I just couldnt let it go. Ive literally spent about 15 hours over the last couple days doing some research on this protein issue this doctor was slamming. GUESS WHAT I FOUND? Before I tell you, let me give you a little background on the stats I looked at. I found data on 167 countries. Complete stats on carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake along with total calories, death rates from cardio vascular disease and diabetes, total populations, BMIs, and levels of inactivity for all 167 countries. I know pretty cool huh! I used to process statistical information and create reports to prove the need for million dollar pieces of equipment in my previous life. Now you know why Im a personal trainer! Ha. Anyway sometimes I slip back into that deep analytical mode. Especially when some doctor posts the kind of BS this guy did. OK ALREADY, WHAT DID YOU FIND? Well, you know how Im always talking about MOVE MORE? That seems to be the common thread, not protein intake. EXERCISE IS MAGIC! Imagine that! Ok maybe not magic but close. SO HERES THE DATA Of 167 countries studied, I broke them down by death rates due to cardio vascular disease and diabetes. I chose to use these two diseases because they have a direct correlation to lifestyle, what you eat and how active you are. The worst 25 countries had the highest death rates. The best 25 countries had the lowest death rates. You get the idea. I looked at percent calories from Carbs, Proteins, Fats and % of Inactivity. See for yourself: Country %Carbs %Protein %Fats % inactivity Worst 25 62 11 27 41 Middle 64 11 25 39 Best 25 61 11 27 38 Protein intake is the same across the board. Whoops Doc, you missed on that one. Fats are the same for the worst and best so you can scratch that statistically. Whats left hmmm? Carbs….hey they are higher for the countries with the higher death rates. But the big one is inactivity. I know a couple of percentage points doesnt seem like much but in statistical speak using the amount of data I collected its significant. BOTTOM LINE, EAT FEWER CARBS and MORE LEAN CLEAN PROTEIN and EXERCISE MORE. But hey, as Dennis Miller once said, I could be wrong.
