Called By God “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” – Acts 13:2 From an early age, Kent Brantly was driven by his faith in God to make a difference. As a teenager, he took mission trips to Uganda, Honduras, Nicaragua, Tanzania and Haiti. He decided to become a medical missionary. In 2013, Kent went to Liberia with his wife and two children to serve a two-year fellowship through Samaritans Purse post-residency program. He was there initially to practice general medicine. But when the Ebola outbreak began, he took on the role of medical director for the Samaritans Purse Ebola Consolidated Case Management Center in Monrovia. Its there that he tested positive for the virus. There is no known cure or vaccine for Ebola, and it has a mortality rate of up to 90%. His family has shown no signs of the virus. In August 2014, he was evacuated to the United States where he is undergoing experimental treatments. Upon arriving in the United States, Dr. Brantly talked about Gods call: “When the result was positive, I remember a deep sense of peace that was beyond all understanding. God was reminding me of what He had taught me years ago, that He will give me everything I need to be faithful to Him. Now it is two weeks later, and I am in a totally different setting. My focus, however, remains the same—to follow God. As you continue to pray for Nancy and me, yes, please pray for our recovery. More importantly, pray that we would be faithful to God’s call on our lives in these new circumstances.” When Christ calls us, we need to be faithful to serve Him. Today in prayer, give this day to wholeheartedly serve the Lord. “The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions, and the nearer we get to Him the more intensely missionary we must become.” “So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.” – Acts 13:3
