Calling all knitters and crocheters! Ten Moons Midwifery will be participating in the, Heads Up on Infant Prematurity/Mortality: National Knit and Crochet Project. If you have some extra yarn and are willing to share your skills, Ten Moons Midwifery will serve as a drop off and ship the newborn hats you create (All hats due by Jan 1st). You can read more about the project below: Dear Friends, The National Perinatal Task Force is requesting your participation in making the “Heads Up on Prematurity/Infant Mortality” knit and crochet project a success. We need as many preemie and infant hats as we can get!!!! A hat for each fragile baby that is struggling to make it through her/his first year. Our goal is to flood local area hospitals’ NICUs with hand knit and chrocheted preemie and infant hats on January 19th, the National Day of Service. This year we are adding local military hospitals to our list of hospitals. We are making sure we do not forget the children of our soldiers. Our babies are being born too small, too early and with life threatening health conditions. These hats will be used as “Going Home” presents for the NICU babies when they leave the NICU. They will symbolize our commitment to and support for the families and hospital NICU staff that we are here to support them, and to make sure their babies do not just survive but THRIVE. This project is being organized in several cities by the National Perinatal Task Force (perinataltaskforce) to bring awareness to the need for improved maternal and infant health care. With over 26,000 infant deaths each year, the U.S. ranks 55th in the world for infant mortality. Nearly 70% of babies who die before their first birthday were born prematurely. The U.S. preterm birth rate of 11.5% also ranks among the worst in the world. The economic toll of preterm birth in the U.S. exceeds $26.2 billion annually. Please visit the March of Dimes Prematurity Report Card web site (marchofdimes.org/mis…/prematurity-reportcard.aspx#) to learn more abut your local prematurity and infant mortality rates. The patterns are on National Perinatal Task Force web site (perinataltaskforce) and on the Face Book group page for this event. Please make a pledge to knit or crochet 10 hats by January 1st.
