Callings and Careers Mt. 22:14, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” Most of us do a lot of calling. It appears that some people have a telephone implanted in their head and are always talking to someone. I make a few calls myself. There are a number of ways for us to view the term calling. I have been called in and called out, called home and called away, called to the hospital, called names (some of which cannot be repeated here), and have been called to serve. We talk about having been called to work or to minister in a certain area, as a doctor, nurse, accountant, secretary, teacher, lawyer, clerk, minister, etc. We plan for things, and we make many choices, but things seldom come out exactly the way we wanted them to. I thought I was called to be a commercial artist, but found in college that I was not suited for that line of work. After military service, I thought I might be a biology teacher; wrong again. I ended up teaching geography and community planning at the university level, and serving as a consultant for most of my working years. My plans were not exactly what God had in mind for me, and He proved to me that He knows what is best. The Bible speaks of being called in a number of places and uses the term to express an invitation, or calling to service. Of all the calls we might receive, God’s calling is by far the most significant; He calls us to Him, to love Him and serve Him by loving others. So many times God has called out to me, from my time of baptism at the age of ten until the present. There have many critical turning points in my life, and without God’s continuing guidance, my life would have ended up much differently. He chose me, He called me to His service, and He continues to call out to me. It makes sense to listen to Him since He is all-knowing and is sovereign over all. What about you? Are you listening to Him? He has a lot to say to you and He wants your life to be one of fulfillment. Focus on His calling, and your career will take care of itself.
