Calum posted the description of a legal Scottlish ballot: Official mark is on the front. On the back there should (according to the legislation) be a unique number, barcode and name of the council. Calum asserts from his reading of the bill that lack of a barcode, serial number or mark does NOT make the ballot illegal. But the Chief Counting Officer confirmed that a ballot DOES need a reference number ofr barcode in order to be legal, that it shod be on the back, and must otherwise be discarded. As someone who survived the sowing-of-confusion tactics of Gore v. Bush, I would urge caution about heeding voices telling you not to speak to lawyers. There should not be this much fog of war about what a legal ballot looks like (echoes of hanging chads which used the same technique of sowing confusion). It is a simple question with simple answers that any Scot is entitled to. Our latest confirmation stands until we hear from the Chief Counting Officer to the contrary and not just via verbal assurances but by being shown the guidelines for legal ballots. You need a barcode or serial number and it should be on the back, to have a valid ballot. The reports we are getting are of ballots that have variations on NONE of these requirements. scottish.parliament.uk/parlia.../Bills/61076.aspx
