Calumet, my favorite photo supply store is closing...for good. Based in Chicago, but with stores throughout the country, it has filed for bankruptcy and going for good. The store at 22 W. 22nd Street is selling its inventory for up to 40% off. One more reason this town feels squeezed out. When I moved to NYC in 1981 one of the most exciting reasons for being here was all the photographic resources, but now they are almost all gone. There were dozens of used photo equipment stores in midtown then. Dozens of them with piles of old camera, lighting systems, props, stands, etc, and they were staffed with people who knew what all this equipment was for. One place was so stacked with old equipment, you needed to climb out the window (several floors above ground), walk on the fire escape and climb into another window to get to another section of the store. Where is all this great stuff now? This city just gets less interesting every day.
