Camarines Norte sets DRR awareness, preparedness activities By: Rosalita B. Manlangit DAET, Camarines Norte, July 10 (PIA) – Several activities were lined-up for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR/CCA) campaign of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of the provincial government here in line with the “Disaster Consciousness Month” this July. Arnel Ferrer, provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer during the “Talakayan sa PIA” of the Camarines Norte Information Center held recently said that they have scheduled one month hanging of streamer as an advocacy for the celebration to create awareness among constituents. He said that on July 15-17 they will be conducting Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Skills Olympics to be held at the Training Institute or “Sanayang Pangkaligtasan”, Sitio Mat-i, Barangay Sto. Domingo Vinzons this province. The knowledge gained by the barangay participants will be re-echoed to their respective areas he said. He cited that the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council meeting will convene in Camarines Norte particularly at the said Training Institute in Vinzons on the coming 30th of July. Ferrer also said that they will spearhead the radio hopping as part of the advocacy to the public in order to give tips and precautions to the public during typhoon and other natural calamities. A clean up drive in coastal areas will be in partnership with the local government units through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (MDRRMCs) and Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (BDRRMCs) of the nine towns namely Daet, Mercedes, Vinzons, Talisay, Paracale, Jose Panganiban, Basud, Sta. Elena and Capalonga within July. The said activity is also in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) through the private and public schools in the locality. In order to avoid illness especially with the onset of the rainy season, they will also conduct “Iwas Lamok-Iwas Dengue” by declogging drainages in the different towns in partnership with the Department of Health (PHO), Provincial Health Office (PHO), MDRRMCs and BDRRMCs; barangay volunteers and DepEd. Gerardo Mallapre, local government operations officer on the other hand said that responsibilities during calamities should not only be for government officials what is important is that constituents should be ready in times of typhoon. To increase their level of awareness is the most important tool during disaster in order to save their lives, he said. This year’s theme of the disaster consciousness month “Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayan Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran”.
