Cambridge, Mass. April 15, 1969: Not a Harvard Football Game: Over ten thousand Harvard students and some faculty members crowded Harvard Stadium in an unprecedented meeting to discuss a student strike. A student strike to protest police actions on the campus was entering its fourth day. A mid-morning check of classrooms showed mostly empty classrooms and a few scattered clusters of students in other classrooms. It was also apparent that less than one third of the 4,800 undergraduates had gone to classes. A list of demands had been put forward by Students for a Democratic Society which were endorsed by popular vote during the meeting. The demands include abolition of all R.O.T.C. programs on campus and amnesty for over 200 arrested when over 400 police officers stormed University Hall Thursday, a halt to university expansion until local housing issues are clarified, and substitution of Harvard scholarships for R.O.T.C students among other things.
