Came accross an interesting lecture thru the Commonwealth Club past Monday. Topic - Ian Morriss book War! What is it Good For ? Morris takes an evolutionary approach to history, arguing that humanity has benefited from centuries of warfare. Starting from hunter/gatherer to present day large city-states, where large populations are thriving and their chances of dying a violent death are slimmer than just a few centuries ago. While he makes a good point and his premise is noteworthy, I have to disagree with him. I think he leaves many other important factors out that are responsible for present day advances, and single handedly credits wars for human development. The history and anatomy of wars interest me, coming from a war torn country, I am always trying to understand the root causes of wars (besides the obvious ones :) to really find deeper / long lasting solutions. What do you think ? Are wars necessary in shaping civilizations ? Ariana
