Came across something that will mean sharper pics with any lens. In a nutshell, set your shutter speed relative to your focal length. i.e. using my EF 75-300mm at 300mm, my shutter speed must be no less than 1/300.In this case, set shutter speed to 1/300 and let the camera decide on the aperture to make this picture happen. I tried this in the 2 pics below. The first pic is at shutter 1/125, where I would normally have taken this while the second pic is at shutter 1/500 i.e. at least 1/300. Note the improved sharpness in the text with the black background. Although the second pic has been enlarged more, it still has better resolution than the other.
