Camiguin, 08. 14. 2014 To all Camiguinons. Hi Friends, during a discussion about the planned oil – fired power plant it came to my mind, that such a power plant would be much more acceptable, if it would run on Bio – Diesel instead of imported diesel or bunker – oil. (If alternatives like Solar– Wind– or Geothermal– Energy are not suitable here) This would require an additional investment for setting up a Coconut – Oil – Mill with Bio – Diesel – Plant in our island province, using our own Copra to feed the plant and produce the electric power needed (and may be some other exportable coconut – products). Since frequently big trucks full of Copra are leaving the island for Mindanao, a sufficient supply of Copra seems guaranteed. Even if this would mean another big investment and costs, it would have immense long –term advantages and future generations of Camiguinons would be grateful, because: • The money for our expensive Kuryente would stay here on the island, instead of going to multinational Oil – companies and Oil – Sheiks • Especially with the growing crisis in the middle east, imported fuels are bound to ever increasing prices, while our Copra – producers could earn a guaranteed minimum price, stabilizing the extreme fluctuations in the price of Copra • The Oil – Mill would generate much needed jobs in the province • Camiguin could become an independent power – producer, with less dependance on the not so stable Mindanao – grid • Coco – Diesel would be really sustainable and it’s carbon emmissions neutral, renewable energy, with cleaner exhausts than mineral – oils [If this version with Bio-Diesel would really be too expensive, an alternative might be to just cleanly burn the Copra (and other parts of Coconuts), feeding a Steam – Turbine which in turn drives the generator]. Regarding these immense economical and ecological advantages, me and my friends hope, that this proposal is really considered by our authorities. Camiguin would earn a good reputation as a “green” and future – oriented province, with state of the art renewable and autonomous energy. It would be much more acceptable than a dirtier, diesel - or bunker – oil fired plant. Sincerely yours. Eric Thuering , Antonia Cadamia and friends, Tagdo
