Camp Lakewood is set in a very picturesque setting. As the name suggests it sits in the middle of the woods with a lake as its major feature. There were some RV’rs that have formed a group and meet there once a year. We were wondering why all these people with the same red shirts on were sitting around camp fires in groups. My question was answered when I met one of them as I was sneaking out of the shower. I hadn’t noticed him coming in until I heard noises coming from the next cubical. As I was trying to have a shave he was giving me a run down on their group. We communal travelers are at home talking to someone while carrying out our ablutions. We were in no hurry to leave as we were calling in to see Robb’s Aunt Jean in Inverness, a suburb of Chicago. We were going to stay the night at a local RV Park and head off to Green Bay in the morning. Val gave Aunt Jean a call. A visit today wasn’t going to work out as Aunt Jean had prior arrangements. We have found it is better not to make too many advance arrangements as something always changes then you have to undo everything. Not to worry, we had a call from some very good friends of Robb and Tara, Kate & Gene. They had lived in New York and shifted to Milwaukie. We were too late to go from Effingham to Green Bay as it would have put us on the doorstep of Robb’s sister Tricia at a late hour. A little background. Kate met Tara while she was travelling in the States in her early 20’s. Kate introduced Tara to Robb. People who know Robb and Tara know what happened next, Taylor. We met Kate and Gene in NZ about 15 years ago where they were married at Chris & Erika Burn’s house. Milwaukee is just a 2 hour drive from Green Bay so we gave them a call. We booked into the Wisconsin State Fair RV Park. The place is pretty much booked out as there is Indy Car racing here this weekend. I was going to have a look around but Kate & Gene picked us up at 6pm and gave us a great tour of Milwaukee, which was so enjoyable looking from the back seat, no pressure to watch what side of the road I was on. We ended up at their 100 year old incredible house in a street with amazing true American houses that we have grown up seeing on TV and movies. I had some double takes from neighbour’s as I was taking photos of their houses. We had a chat and drinks then off in a taxi for dinner. Kate had the taxi driver give us a tour of some amazing architecture the city has on show. Kate manages to have everyone do what she wants as was displayed after dinner when she had the waiter wait at our table for Gene to go to the toilet to take a group photo of us. There was a large queue at the toilet. After dinner we strolled a few blocks to a Hotel bar where we listened to piano music and had a few more drinks. The evening was soon over and we got a taxi each and headed off. We had a lovely evening which was an added bonus in our trip, to see Milwaukee and catch up with Kate and Gene after such a long time. Our taxi driver was a real character. He had the inside of his taxi decked out with Christmas lights. He had music playing so loud it would have sounded like a Boy racers’ car. He did turn it down only because he was looking for another station. He made us laugh all the way home, especially Val, he never laughed once. That was either because some of us may have been a bit tipsy or what he was saying was not that funny. Anyway a great finish to a great night. Rained all night, not good for the Indy Car racing, off to Green Bay about 10am.
