Camp Lesson Plan sample: Games with Medicine Balls Medicine Ball Relay Divide the kids into two teams. Assign them a starting position and a destination to run to. The first child in line picks up the light medicine ball, runs to the destination and performs 2 reps of a movement the trainer designates, e.g., two roll-ups. They run back and tag the next person in line who does the same thing. The team that gets all members through first wins. Change the movement each round to maintain interest. Medicine Ball Shuttle Runs This version is an AMRAP in a given time. Do not tell the kids how long the AMRAP will be or they will game the clock. Additionally, this can be used as a warm-up in a shorter time domain (~5:00). Arrange four to six campers in each line (for adequate recovery). The medicine balls weigh 4#, 6# and 8# and are arranged in a straight line 5-8 meters apart, beginning 5-8 meters from the start position. The start position and ball locations are marked by cones. Explain to campers that this is an all-out sprint. Upon “Go,” the first camper sprints to the first medicine ball and runs it back to the start position, then immediately sprints to second medicine ball and runs it back to the start position. He or she immediately sprints to third medicine ball and runs it back to the start position. The second camper returns the medicine balls to their original placement, one at a time, in the same way. The third camper retrieves the medicine balls exactly as the first camper did, and the fourth camper returns the medicine balls exactly as the second camper. The WOD continues in alternating sequence until time is called. For safety, please align medicine balls to the same side of cone for all lines. Medicine Ball Squat Potato Following the rules of standard Hot Potato, have the kids create a circle and begin to pass around a small medicine ball. Set a timer for 15 seconds to 1 minute. When the timer goes off whoever is holding the medicine ball does 3 squats in the middle of the circle. Play resumes. Medicine Ball Switch Divide children into 2 groups and send to opposite sides of the room. On “Go,” they run, bear crawl, hop (trainer calls the movement) to the opposite side of room to retrieve medicine ball and run back to their side of the room. Musical Medicine Ball Similar to Musical Chairs, place medicine balls in a line leaving 2’-3’ between them. Surround the medicine balls with plenty of cones at least a few feet around the medicine balls and keep players outside the cones, until the music stops. Use one less medicine ball than you have participants. When the music begins, kids do the trainer-designated exercise. When the music stops the kids race to get in a squat position over a medicine ball. No one is allowed to go knees forward over a ball or to sit on it; hips must be back to hang in the air over the ball in a good squat position. If there is a tie, hold a squat off for 30 seconds: max squats counted by peers. Remove one ball each round. Exercises that work well for this are lunges, bear crawls, side shuffles, run with hands over head, broad jumps, burpee broad jumps, alligator crawls and forward rolls. crossfitbrandx/store/
