Can I ask what criteria your doctors/surgeons have for - TopicsExpress

Can I ask what criteria your doctors/surgeons have for dilatations? Our 3 year old has never had a dilatation, but he also doesnt eat a lot of regular 3-year food. Much of his food is still pureed. If he does eat textured food (i.e. very soft rice), it will take him over an hour to eat 3-4 tablespoons. If we dont go slow, he will get stuck. He is a long-gap type c, and due to the fact that his repair site is big, his surgical team wont consider a dilatation for him unless he cant keep anything down, even liquids. They prefer to avoid any type of procedures to do with his esophagus becase it could cause more issues for him in the long run. I can definitely understand this, and dont want to push any unnecessary procedures. But at the same time, when I see what other EA/TEF kids on this page are able to eat, I feel we are far behind with his eating for a 3-year old. I know every child is different, but Im just curious as to what technically qualifies a child for dilatation. We did do an x-ray, and there is no doubt that he has narrowing, but even with the narrowing, they still dont recommend a dilatation. Is it normal for an EA/TEF to be eating mostly purees at 3?
