Can I encourage anyone in this group who has direct contact with any asylum seeker on Manus Island, or journalist or activist that has direct contact with Manus Island, to please contact them and dissuade them from continuing with hunger strikes, protests, or other forms of self-harm, such as swallowing razor blades or stitching their lips together. The immediately safety of asylum seekers must be everyones first priority. These measures will unfortunately achieve nothing. These asylum seekers are putting their lives in danger with little prospect for positive change. Hunger strikes and other forms of self-harm are not generating any sympathy from those who actually have the power to effect change and will only result in further suffering and loss of life.
