Can anyone tell me where I state the Catholic Church is the creator of this heresy anywhere in this quote? Because my instructor assumed I was referring to the Catholics, I received a lower grade. The term anti-Semitism, the theories or actions against Jews because of prejudice, was coined in the late 1870s by Wlhelm Marr. While the term was coined in reference to the anti-Jewish activities in Europe during that time, the term cannot exclude other Semitic people groups, such as Muslim or Christian Arabs. For the purpose of this definition, the term Anti-Semitism will be focused primarily on anti-Jewish activities and rhetoric during the late 17th century up until the current time. During the 17th century all Jews were considered evil, by those claiming to be Christians, because a few of their ancestors killed Jesus. This was a long held view created by certain heretics in the early church. This view continued through centuries. In the 18th century, a new version of Anti-Semitism began to take shape. This form, by way of the Enlightenment, blamed the Jews for Christianity and the terrible things “Christians” did in their bids for power. Now the Jews had two groups after them, the Christians and the free-thinkers. It wasn’t until the late 1800s, when Jews were emancipated in France and Germany, that their lot changed, or so they thought. Unfortunately, the rise of Nationalism reared its head and, under the banner of ethnicity, Anti-Semitism changed forms again. Now, the Jews were viewed as foreign invaders and were to blame for social ills. Under this new form, the political leaders found the perfect scapegoat for all things wrong with their countries. Many evil men, such as Hitler, rose to power and tried to eradicate the Jews. For many decades after World-War II, anti-Semitism was on the wane. However, anti-Semitism is once again on the rise in Europe. There are even legal attacks on Jewish traditions, such as Circumcision.
