Can open economic capitalism and political democracy exist - TopicsExpress

Can open economic capitalism and political democracy exist harmoniously alongside each other? Americans are decidedly ambivalent about what should be done to address social inequality. In some ways, Americans are attracted to equality; in other ways, they view inequality as justified. A study of over 2700 leaders in various areas showed that they feel any fair distribution of goods should be based on equality of opportunity rather than equality of result. Capitalisms ideal conditions assume equality of opportunity. Equality of result is expected in the political arena in the sense that power should be equally distributed. Can equality of political power and inequality in economic standing coexist? Or does economic power lead to inordinate, unequal political power, thereby making a mockery of political equality? ~Charles E. Hurst (Social Inequality: Forms, Causes, and Consequences) Im going to love this class. This is one book I dont mind staying up all night to read.
