Can someone (Ethnic Studies professors y activists) es’plain to me why Mexican supermarkets are more expensive than King Soopers, Wal-Mart, Safeway, etc.? I consistently try and frequent authentic Mexican mercado’s, but I consistently find that they charge a quarter, a dollar, sometimes $3.00 more for basic food items ranging from baby wipes to vegetable oil to Lucky Charms. I’m all for supporting La Raza, but I don’t understand this wild difference in pricing. Seriously, most gente I know are on budgets, so why would a Mexican owned supermarket feel it can milk shoppers? Comparing prices, I notice that by frequenting Avanza, Mi Pueblo, etc; there is discrepancy from $1.00 up to $50.00 of my overall receipt compared to the others . Why should I get hosed at the check-out just because the store is “authentic” Mexican and I have a desire to support them? A corporation in any language is still a corporation, verdad? Controversy over immigration checks In September 2012, Mi Peublo was criticized by labor organisations for enrolling in E-verify, a Department of Homeland Security program which screens employees for irregularities in their immigration status. As owner, Juvenal Chavez was accused of hypocrisy, since he started out in business as an illegal immigrant. A spokesperson for the business said that Chavez supported fixing the "broken" immigration system.[9] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mi_Pueblo_Food_Center
