Can someone please explain why the United States has decided to release a 480 page summary of a 6,000 page classified report on the sources and methods utilized after 9-11 by the CIA? The Justice Department investigated the events discussed in this report and filed no criminal charges. So this is not about justice. People on all sides of the political spectrum who know the contents have uniformly stated the release of this report will incite violence and embolden extremists. It will give these extremists yet another excuse to attack American personnel and assets worldwide. America is not perfect. Never has been and never will be. Confession (so I’m told) is good for the soul and some among us will feel better by telling the world how imperfect we are (hint: we / they already know that). So will the cost in blood and treasure be worth feeling better? If your parent, spouse or child is kidnapped, tortured and murdered as a result of this report being released, is it still worth it? Surely after six years and the recent mid-term elections this cannot be another “blame Bush” moment. These sources and methods – regardless of whether one has the stomach for it or not – provided foundational intelligence about the Al Qaeda network after the Sept. 11 attacks. Unless one believes it feasible that three different CIA directors and three different deputy directors conspired over a seven-year period to lie about the programs effectiveness, the undisputed facts are that actionable intelligence was gathered about the Al Qaeda network - including information that led to the eventual execution of Bin Laden. There were no additional attacks on the homeland for the remainder of the previous administration - none. Other than a self-inflicted wound to the country, I see nothing positive coming out of this. Please explain what I am missing. Seriously.
