Can someone put an end to the unfortunate situation in Taraba State? In 2012, Governor Suntain was involved in a near fatal air crash. He was the pilot. Suntai was flown to Germany and later the United States for medical treatment and rehabilitation at exhorbitant costs to the arguably poorest State in Nigeria. After almost one year in the hospital and in the bid to prevent his Deputy Garba Umar from taking over as the substantive Governor, Suntai was railroaded by to Taraba to retake the office of the Governor. He was unable to do so because he was clearly incapacitated. Attempts by his loyalists to supplant the Deputy-Governor who has been acting was foiled by the late Speaker Tsokwa and others. Garba Umar, then emerged as the Acting Governor. It was a situation where you had an incapacitated Governor and an Acting Governor. When it became clear that Suntai was not able to govern, he was again transported to the UK for treatment and now, he has been brought back by his loyalists who see him as their meal tickets and access to power. Suntai whom we are told is hail and well, fit as an athlete cannot tell where he is or at and yet, we are being told he is back and ready to govern. Arrant nonsense! This Suntai situation, reminds one of the unfortunate President YarAdua drama where his loyalists seeking to keep him in power at all costs and for their benefits, held the nation hostage, forged signature claiming the President was well and fit and infact, signed the supplementary Budget. They even contrived an interview with the BBC to deceive us but at last, the truth spoke and what most of us remember about that decent man today, is the drama about his sickness and death forgetting the positive things he did. Taraba State, is not the personal estate and property of Suntai. Enough of this nonsense. The man cant even govern himself talk less of the State. No matter the ethnic, religious and political permutations in the State, Garba Umar, the Acting-Governor, should and must be allowed to become the Substantive Governor. This is an one instance why the Constitution provided for a deputy. Suntai is medically incapacitated and cannot continue, his deputy and now acting governor, takes his place. Taraba is too poor and needy to maintain two governors. Suntai should resign and if he fails to do so, Garba Umar should arrange to have him impeached. Taraba is bigger than any person and that includes Suntai.
