Can someone tell me what happened to the days when your momma put sunbeam bread bags over your shoes and sent your 6 yr old butt walking to the bus stop in the dark through two feet of snow to catch a school bus after crossing the road to get to the side the door was on? The days when you had to shift gears in that old VW because Carlos Crawford had the window down so he could scrape the windshield to see to get home from wrestling practice. The days when the bus to Cool Ridge didnt make it out the side roads and you would see Troy Goodson running through the ice, sleet, rain and snow because he didnt want to miss practice. How bout the days when Danny Carter and I would run when there wasnt school not because we loved it but because it was what wrestlers did. Or the days when Dix Manning and Larry Snuffer gave you a list of what to eat, how many push ups, chin ups and sit ups that you were expected to do on your own after or before practice and you did it because you respected them and you knew that they knew what it took to win? The days when Mr. Scarbro would drop Dereck-Angela Scarbro off at the bottom of the hill every day rain or shine and he would willingly run the rest of the way home bc he wanted to be a champion. The days when Larry Ransom and hundreds of others looked forward to wrestling on the weekend bc the intensity was nothing compared to their partner in the practice room. The days when Don Shuler told you to wear boots and dress warm for the first of your two a days and then sent you off running through a foot of snow through Lynchburg then after 2 miles or so you played football in a field for the next 2 hours. Or he took you running up Chandlers Mountain and as if that wasnt torture enough you took a left and ran under the power lines through the brush, briers, hornets nest up the side of the mountain where only the power company had ever been before. People wonder why old school wrestling coaches dont tolerate excuses. Well its because we didnt make them.
