Can the priest change the readings for Mass? Question: On Sunday, January 11, the Second Reading was different than the one shown in the book in the pew (the missalette). Who gets to pick different readings for Sunday Mass and why is that? I thought they were standard each week and could not be changed. Answer: While normally there is only one set of readings for each particular Sunday Mass, there are a few times during the year when there is a choice of readings provided (on Easter Sunday, for example there is a choice of two Second Readings). Since the readings are the basis for the homily, it is normally up to the priest celebrating that particular mass to make the selection. For the recent Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the missalette company should have really put in all the selections because it made it seem that there was a standard or preferable set of readings for that day (which there was not). Weekday masses afford much greater variety of choices and options for readings whereas Sundays and Solemnities normally do not.
