Can there be a thing like too much talent? I was looking over the incredible work that Orson Welles accomplished in one lifetime and yet the man was always scrounging for money! I mean did the superabundance of gifts strangle the practical side of life, or never allow it to even develop? James Cameron can do whatever the hell he wants, and he is not even on the same planet as Welles in artistic terms. There is a scene in the Zapata Western Tepepa, a paycheck role, which shows what a monstrous talent Welles had. He is a sleazy, cynical military man, seeking to break the hero by reading out confessions from his friends. You have no idea if the papers actually contain confessions or he is making them up on the spot and Welles conveys only too clearly that it doesnt matter - he is doing a squalid unpleasant job because there is really nothing else he can do at this point of his life. Marlon Brandos Time - the weekly news magazine scene in the extended Apocalypse Now does not hold a candle to the stunning cynicism and cruelty that Welles mined in this scene. He was a famous jerk, but that alone cannot explain how his talent seems to have devoured him.
