Can we get a little help in Arizona, please. Monday, HB 2291 will be voted on again. This bill opens the doors wide for Privatization of k-12 education in the state. The reason I am posting again (about this) is that I believe that most people dont understand how this is going to work. For example, I have been communicating with an Az grad student in Education who thinks that when Huppenthal says that vouchers will save the state money that it means that the cost to educate the voucher child will be less that the cost to educate the child when in the Public School setting. I say to him who pays for the costs, the tax payer and thats you, right ? He gets it. Well, I say, if the deficit between the Education costs less the school system revenues for the District you live in go up and they issue a levy, who has to pay more taxes? He admits that he would have to pay his share but he still does not get it. Well I tell him: that is going to happen because for each voucher child the state is going to NOT pay the District its normal share of these costs (needed to maintain what is left of the public system) plus what it deposits for the voucher is not now even enough to cover the costs at private schools. Do you get it now. All I get is silence. So, I say, forget the cost difference which you are going to have to share in, what happens to the child when he/she takes itthe voucher to the private school and is told it is not enough? The child then becomes part of the charter demand which puts the charter in the position of either accepting the child and compensating by asking for additional $ from the state (which any Administrative Law judge would likely grant them) or demanding a contract change which 99% of Administrative Contract Managers (like the one who works for the AZED) would argue for because they absolutely HATE being sued and, in this case seeing their contracts held up and the childrens education disrupted with the charter shutting down services because stockholders do not tolerate budget shortfalls. There are potentially ugly and costly scenarios in store for us, not to mention the threat of religious education and teaching of creationism catching fire again. I get another blank stare. Dont let them do it!! It is time for all of us to act. Use
