I hosted a fundraising dinner for the team which had very little by way of gear, jerseys etc. Fats was an inspiration to the whole team and I met him on a number of occasions after the World Cup. He was in Samoa after cyclone Val and he roped me in to a tv interview with TV1. There are numerous stories about his time with Manu Samoa, many no doubt apocrpyhal but the one I like most goes something like this -- The final match to select a team for the World Cup was played in Suva against Fiji refereed by a Tongan. Before the game Fats laid down the law to the team --- absolutely no fighting regardless of the provacation. The opposition apparently came out swinging etc and Samoa led by something like 19 points at halftime. With 5 minutes to go and the game safely in the bag a plaintiff voice cried out from the bottom of a ruck Can we hit them yet Fats? The answer was not brought to my attention.
