Can we start our stories with a dream? That question did come up - TopicsExpress

Can we start our stories with a dream? That question did come up at conference. The answer is, “Don’t even think about it.” First of all, a dream is usually a way of telling back story. The emphasis is on “telling.” I came about as close as I could get in Better than Revenge, but no dream, and no flashback. If the dream isn’t used to tell back story, then the author is more than likely trying to place some foreshadowing into the story. However, is the reader likely to understand that from the opening paragraph? Better to use foreshadowing once the readers know the characters and are into the story and will pick up on the hint.
