Canadian Boxing Scene by Paul Doiron This coming September, Halifaxs World ranked boxer Tyson Prince of Hali Cave could very well hear the announcement that hes been waiting a lifetime for. When the ring announcer lets the fans on hand at the September 13th card being held in the Nova Scotia capital know the winner of the evenings Main Event, history could very well be made if Caves name is called. Cave, with a Pro record of 24-2 will be fighting Mexicos Edgar Martinez over 12 rounds for the IBA World Super Bantam-weight championship in front of his home fans. This bout will be the first time a World title has been contested for in a Halifax ring since Roddy MacDonald, a native of New Waterford NS faced Marvin Camel at the Halifax Metro Center on December 13th 1983 for the vacant World Cruiser-weight title. (Camel would score a fifth round TKO to win the championship and go on to win 45 of 62 career bouts while MacDonald would win 29 of 40 fights before fighting for the last time on November 28th 1992.) During his 26 fight career, the 32 year old Cave has won the Canadian Super Bantam-weight title, the CAM (Canadian-American-Mexican) crown, the WBC Continental Americas title as well as the NABA championship. Look for Cave to capture the World title, putting on a boxing display that will see Martinez hitting air while the Halifax fighter makes him miss all over the place. Cave has proven himself a very popular fighter with Nova Scotia fight fans and the famed Halifax Forum should see a standing room only crowd on hand comeSeptember 13th. Monctons smooth boxing master Jonah Arbuckle will be looking to improve on his impressive 9-3 record as the 160 pounder takes on the tough Aubrey Morrow(5-1-2) on July 18th in Nanaimo BC. Arbuckle, whos challenged for the Canadian championship in November of 2011 is a huge crowd favourite and a win over Morrow could very well lead to another title shot for the Hub City slickster. Long time trainer, Phil Baraly of Moncton had the following to say about the upcoming Arbuckle-Morrow fight. Morrow is in for more than he can handle. Hes going to wish that hed never picked Arbuckle for his first fight back on his comeback. Jonah is on top of his game right now! Baraly has been with Arbuckle since the first time that he put on a pair of boxing gloves and hes done a great job helping to develop Jonah into one of the countrys very best boxers. 2014 could very well be the year that Arbuckle captures the Canadian title. Frederictons undefeated Brandon Brewer will be facing Mexicos boxing veteran Roberto Valenzuela in a scheduled eight rounder on Saturday July 26th in Shediac as part of the All-Star boxing card being presented by Monctons Victory Promotions. Brewer, the Canadian Light Middle-weight champ is coming off two big KO wins on US soil and he will be taking a big step forward against the hard hitting Mexican puncher. Brandon, whos record stands at an impressive 11 wins (five KOs) and a draw will be looking to improve on that. Brewer has shown himself to be one of the best prospects to come out of the Maritimes in a very long time and he keeps thrilling fans where ever he fights with his exciting non-stop, action filled style. This guy has a lot of experience with a lot of knockouts. Hes got heavy hands and hes the kind of fighter that we were looking for. It will give us the chance to show the fans that were also becoming very experienced and very heavy-handed as well. This fight will not go to the judges cards, said Brewer. Look for a big win for the undefeated NB boxing sensation. Others seeing action on the Shediac card are JP Arsenault, Miramichis Travis Connors, and Canadian champ Steve Wilcox of ON. A bout that fans will not want to miss will see PEIs Richard Arsenault taking on Elsipogtog NBs Nathan Millier. Both of these guys are undefeated and this bout will be all out war right from the opening bell. Like the saying goes, someones 0 has to go! Calgarys Steve Claggett, one of Canadas hottest boxing prospects is the one who makes a living by beating people up but when the hard hitting Welter-weight recently tried to break up a fight between two dogs, he ended up the worse for wear. Claggett, Canadian Welter-weight champ suffered a bad bite to his hand and had to take several months off of training because of it. Hes back in the gym and will soon be ready to continue his assault on any 147 pounder brave enough to face him. Claggett, whos record is 19 wins (with 13 KOs), two losses and one draw plans to stay busy over the next 12 to 18 months by fighting as often as he can with hopes of breaking into the World rankings. Claggett is a former WBC Light Welter-weight Intercontinental Youth champ and its great that he will be resuming his career because fight fans everywhere need to see this guy in action. He can really fight!
