Canadians who make us proud... thestar/sports/tennis/2014/05/24/eugenie_bouchard_wins_nuremberg_cup_for_first_wta_title.html * * * FRENCH OPEN UPDATE: The FO maintains its reputation for being the most unpredictable of all the Grand Slams. World #3 and US Open Champion Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) was ousted in the first round (as were #9 Kei Nishikori (JAP); #11 Grigor Dimitrov (BUL); #16 Tommy Haas (GER); #21 Nicolas Almagro (ESP); #30 Vaske Pospisil (CAN) ). In the 2nd round so far, down have gone #15 Mikhail Youzhny (RUS); #20 Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR), and; #26 Feliciano Lopez (ESP) On the ladies side are out #1 Serena Williams (!!! USA); #2 Na Li (!!! CHN); #12 Flavia Pennetta (ITA); #13 Carolina Wozniacki (DEN); #16 Sabine Lisicki (GER): #17 Roberta Vinci (ITA); #20 Alizé Cornet (FRA); #21 Kirsten Flipkens (BEL); #24 Anastasia Pavlyunchenkova (RUS): #25 Kaia Kanepi (EST); #29 Venus Williams (USA); #30 Klara Koukalova (CZE), and; #32 Elena Vesnina (RUS). Where our Canadians are concerned, Steven Diez lost in 1st round of qualies, Gabriela Dabrowski lost in the 2nd, Frank Dancevic lost in the 3rd and final round, while Aleksandra Wozniak & Peter Polansky advanced to the main draw. Unfortunately, Wozniaks first match was v #26 Sorana Cirstea (ROU) and Polanskys was v #6 Tomas Berdych (CZE) so both lost (but Wozniak did get one match point along the way). Sharon Fichman also got an unfortunate draw, having her first match v #6 Jelena Jankovic (SRB), but not before having taken the first set. So in singles remain Raonic (who got to a Masters 1000 final on clay a few weeks ago) and Bouchard (who won her first ATP title ever, on clay, days before her 1st round match in Paris). Both have handily won their way to the 3rd round. In doubles, Pospisil was ousted in the 1st round (wonder if hes injured as his results have been sub-par of late). However Sharon Fichman (with partner Anastasia Pavlyunchenkova) took out the #9 team in the first round, and Gabriela Dabrowski (with partner Alicja Rosolska) also won her first round match. The legendary Daniel Nestor (with partner Nenad Zimonjic) has advanced to the third round, and we can have high hopes as the team has defeated the #1 Bryan twins, twice in row in the finals of the Masters 1000 clay tournaments leading to the FO, held in Madrid and Rome. GO CANADA!!!
