Cancer. Death. Selfishness. Death. It begins with a small rogue cell which grows into a tumor and amasses for the sole purpose of feeding itself and destroying anything that happens to get in it’s way...namely organs, bone, tissue, etc. In cancer there is no humility, no deference or collaboration. It is simply focused on itself, sustaining itself, feeding itself. Death. Every three months, like a lot of cancer survivors, I go through PET & CT scans to locate cancer…death. It is a gift to be able to participate in these scans to try to stay ahead of it in this manner. It is my prayer we will be able to do so for a very long time. As I reflect on all of this I wonder…what if there was a scan designed to detect cancer of the heart? A scan that would light up when hate, anger, lust, being quarrelsome, selfishness, being judgmental, etc. was beginning to take root. If we were honest we would admit we all wrestle with these things. The least common denominator in all of this sin is – me. Selfishness. Death. When I am forced to slow down to process what I am dealing with health wise a flood of thoughts emerge. It ushers in a time of introspection. Life becomes simple. Instead of focusing on the next quarter’s earnings I am forced to think about today. In all honesty it is where I am supposed to be focused. Thank God my PET & CT scans are scheduled for every quarter and not every year. If we waited a year to locate the cancer and eradicate it…it just might be too late. If we confess our sins one to another, if we keep short accounts and apologize to our friends and spouses whenever we’re wrong or when we wrong them this cancer of the heart would never take root. Chemotherapy for cancer of the heart begins with bringing these issues to the light through confession, forgiveness and keeping short accounts. Frankly, I am no expert in this field but I promise to try and get better. Will you join me?
