Canonical rolls out Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander Canonical recently rolled out the latest OS from its roster, Ubuntu 13.10, now available for desktop and smartphones users. The release also comes with a range of mobile core apps made by the Ubuntu developer community, with the list including a browser, calendar, clock, weather app as well as a calculator. The company has also said that it is working with partners to get Ubuntu smartphones to the market by next year. According to Rick Spencer, who leads the company’s consumer-facing engineering, “Ubuntu 13.10 is a full server-grade OS that offers a mobile experience and is lean enough to support mobile devices, kicking off a new era in mobile security and computing convergence. The release of the new OS also brings the full SDK for developing app for all Ubuntu form factors. And this tool set looks pretty expansive, including templates and extensions, theming, automatic orientation as well as easy-to-use UI tools for rapid application development. The toolset also comes with support for native and HTML5 development, as well as a “responsive app design” that, according to the company, will make it easy for developers to create content aimed at phones, tablets and PCs with a single database. With this feature, any query that is typed into the Dash Home by the user will be picked up by the Smart Scope server. The latter will then determine which categories of content is the most relevant. The server will also constantly improve the results by learning which categories and results are most helpful to the user over time. Last on the list of new features on Ubuntu 13.10 is MIR, the new open source graphics stack that supports higher frame-rates, and is enabled by default for smartphones. The OS provides the same as an option for desktop users. MIR, according to the company, will give improved performance in games, with a simplified driver model for hardware support, as well as better access to the latest underlying graphics capabilities in current devices.
