Cant. Stop. Snapping. FYSOP, this is what you do to people. Were left with raw fingertips, hoarse voices from cheering, and hearts and minds sore from stretching. You put us in uncomfortable situations and then turn us around, til we feel at home with complete strangers. For those who transform street corners and park benches into homes for themselves, their children, their pets, there is no euphemism weak enough to rival our insecurity when we face these people. People, not objects. We see them carrying their homes around them, so we objectify based on their visible comfort objects, forgetting that we couldnt even try to fit all of our possessions into a few trashbags We see the trashbags, the dirt, the ragged cardboard sign before we see the individual. We scoff and we criticize and we blame and we blame and we blame. I say we because this is all-inclusive; even subconsciously, its all too easy to ignore the veteran on the side of the highway exit, and were all too comfortable in our portable lazy-boy chairs (read: drivers seat, rolling desk chair, straight-backed restaurant chair, etc.) But at least society grant us the right to take up space, right? FYSOP, some might say that you give voices to the voiceless. Which is a great thing, really. But it doesnt sit well with me; theres something off about that claim. I am sure, however, that you DO give us a chance to listen to what our city is saying, regardless of how long or how loud its been shared. This is also an all-inclusive statement: if you know, you act. Awareness and education are starting-points not only for community service (CSC plug), but for changing our perspective, necessarily replacing the lens used to see through. Its not a new form of GroupThink, nor do you brainwash us into dramatizing every unfortunate situation on the planet, but you do give us the opportunity to change what wrongs we do see, enabling us to act and serve and share.
