Cant believe it but there are 4x Water stories on CITV News tonight. Heres one of them: Earlier this month on the 9th of June, New Zealand company GHD was awarded the detailed design contract for phase 2 of Te Mato Vai project. Phase 2 includes: a) replacing the trunk main - which is the pipes from the 12 water intakes on Rarotonga to the backroad ring mains b) improving the 12 water intakes c) installing water treatment facilities d) and installing more storage The Te Mato Vai project team is expected to meet with the people around Rarotonga again to show them the design, the options and costs, and to ask the people as to which option they would like. This wont be until closer to the end of the year. The implementation will commence shortly after detailed design approval but phase 2 will be tendered out in work parts or schemes so that for instance, one company is replacing the trunk main, another is improving the intakes, another is doing the treatment and another the storage. By breaking down the project into small deliverable schemes, this allows Cook Islands companies to bid for the work. Tendering out phase 2 as one whole project will mean that only big New Zealand companies will have the resources to bid for the work. The construction bids for Phase 2 will come out by September but awarding of the tenders will not happen until after the detailed design has been approved.
