Cant resist posting about this here. This morning we asked our business manager to take a look into getting us insurance for our new studio as we now have alot of new equipment in there as well as insurance that covers touring gear as we have to travel with a bunch of instruments and special audio/visual equipment when we are doing our bigger live shows with the band, so its about time we get proper insurance. If the studio got broken into or something was stolen or damaged on the road wed be pretty heart broken. The result of this mornings phone calls was far from what we expected to hear back. Weve blanked out the company names here as its not important, but this whole situation is just such a perfect illustration with whats wrong with so many parts of Canadas music industry and there lack of support for electronic acts. Music and touring funders, our own union, industry reps, and apparently even musician-specific insurance companies are still having a tough time wrapping their head around the fact that in 2014 IT IS possible to write, produce, and engineer your own original music electronically. Not to mention the fact we now we have a full band we write and perform with. I wonder how long its going to take for our antiquated music industry to wake up and realize they are shunning an enormous and diverse musical genre that is absolutely exploding both creatively and economically around the world right now? Their lack of support is making them look like dinosaurs clinging onto an era that will soon be forgotten... I just got off the phone with the rep that I use at _______ and after 15 minutes of an intense debating over whether DJ’s are considered musicians, she concluded you guys are not eligible for the gear insurance program....AND actually told me you shouldn’t even be part of the union. She actually said, and I quote, “I go home at night and put my cd in the cd player, I cannot join the musicians union and state I am a performer!” WOW!
