Canterbury Cricket Board decision re CMCA Premier Mens 1 day Competition CCA board approval of the CMCA recommendation to revert to 8 teams in their Premier Men’s One Day competition On March 12 Canterbury Cricket informed the Canterbury Country Cricket Association that the Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket Association (CMCA) recommended reverting back to an 8 team 1 day premier competition. This would obviously result in Canterbury Country and the Canterbury Under 20 teams no longer competing in this competition. At that time Canterbury Country Cricket responded by stating that they were reconsidering their programme for their Hawke Cup team. This included playing a greater number of longer form cricket and less one day cricket matches. Canterbury Cricket did not receive any further communication from Canterbury Country Cricket on this matter. On May 1 the Canterbury Cricket board considered the CMCA recommendation. The Canterbury cricket board certainly saw merit and benefits for Canterbury Country Cricket and the Canterbury Under 20 teams competing in the CMCA 1 day competition. However, the Canterbury Cricket board was required to make a decision based on the retention of autonomy for the CMCA to govern and administer their own club competition. This is consistent with Canterbury Cricket not dictating to our District Associations or Sub Associations, including Canterbury Country Cricket, the team composition of their club competitions. When the Canterbury Cricket board decision was communicated to Canterbury Country Cricket it was reiterated that Canterbury Cricket is committed to assisting Canterbury Country Cricket with their Hawke Cup preparation. Canterbury Cricket provides this assistance to all District Associations. This has resulted in many Canterbury Cricket coaches including Gary Stead, Craig McMillan, Dayle Hadlee, Chris Martin and Paul Wiseman coaching under age and senior representative players in many District Associations. Canterbury Cricket wants to see a Hawke Cup winning team from our province and we remain committed to assisting our District Associations to prepare a Hawke Cup winning side. This may involve matches for the Hawke Cup team in the Canterbury ‘A’ programme and the provision of high performance coaching assistance. To this end Canterbury Cricket will continue to work with Canterbury Country Cricket and all our District Associations to assist in the creation and delivery of a meaningful and effective player and Hawke Cup team development programme. In regard to the Canterbury Under 20 team this forms an important part of the high performance pathway within Canterbury Cricket. With this team no longer competing in the CMCA 1 day competition the player development programme will need to be changed accordingly with the objective of providing effective experiences and coaching for this age group.
