Canton rail work starts this week; detour will be lifted early August By SUSAN MENDE WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2013 ARTICLE OPTIONS AA CANTON — Crews from CSX rail company are expected to start replacing the Route 11 rail crossing on Thursday and finish late next week. Project Engineer Thomas A. Maroun Jr. said completion of the rail crossing will allow state transportation officials to lift the detour that’s been directing traffic off Main Street for the past several weeks. He hopes to lift the detour by Aug. 12, which will allow traffic to flow through downtown without interruption. The CSX rail crossing is near the intersection of Jay Street, which will be turned into a cul-de-sac as part of the $9.55 million state Department of Transportation project. “They have done the signal work. Now they have to install new concrete panels and rail lines and reline the tracks,” Mr. Maroun said. “That’s supposed to take four or five days.” The two-year project is on schedule to wrap up by Nov. 30, Mr. Maroun said. This season’s work has focused on replacing the underground water and sewer mains from Park Place to Stiles Avenue. Last year, crews replaced the underground piping in the downtown business section, stretching from the village park to Riverside Drive. Work has gone smoother this year because traffic was detoured away from the work site, Mr. Maroun said. “With the road closed, we were able to get a lot more done. We are ahead of schedule,” he said. Now that the pipe work is complete, crews from Luck Bros. Inc., Plattsburgh, will start storm drainage work from the railroad crossing to Harrison Street. A crew from Collins Concrete, Cobbleskill, is scheduled to start installing curbing on Monday in the stretch from Park Place heading eastward toward Stiles Avenue. New sidewalks in that area will also be installed. “Basically what’s left is a drainage work and a little reconstruction,” Mr. Maroun said. As the project winds down, crews will reconstruct the section of Main street from Riverside Drive to Gouverneur Street, including a portion of Gouverneur Street. The highway in that area will be milled at night this fall. In early October, the final layer of paving will be installed in the downtown business section. The pavement stripings and extra signs also will be installed. Village Superintendent Brien E. Hallahan credited DOT officials and Luck Bros. for running a smooth operation so far this season. “They did an excellent job of traffic control throughout the year. I’m very pleased with the progress they’re making,” he said.
