Cantors message for August 1-2, 2014: As the world anxiously - TopicsExpress

Cantors message for August 1-2, 2014: As the world anxiously watches the war in Israel and Gaza, traditional Jews prepare to mourn the destruction of the ancient Temple on Tisha BAv this coming Tuesday. The deeply distressing verses of Eicha, the Book of Lamentations, will be intoned. Reform Judaism has been ambivalent about, or even dismissive of Tisha BAv, envisioning that our people be a light to the nations, (Isaiah 49:6) rather than restore the Temple and its sacrifices. Lamentations ends with the familiar words chanted upon returning the Torah to the ark, hashiveinu...vnashuva Return us to You, and we will return. (Lamentations 5:21) Let us pray that all hearts and minds turn from the cycle of despair and violence, to healing, repair and wholeness. I Tonights services will be in the sanctuary and tomorrow mornings service will be in the social hall. Next Friday evening, August 8, please come and wish Amy Dattner-Levy and Peter Levy Mazal tov before they leave for their new home in New Hampshire, where Peter has accepted a rabbinic position.
