Canyon Crime Print this article - Email this article Man Pleads Not Guilty to Senseless Act of Violence Posted by Beth Livesay on Jun 22, 2007 - 5:51:00 PM On May 29, 2007 at approximately 8:45 pm, James McKinney left his home to walk the dark streets to a nearby store. On the corner of Wilton Place and Olympic Blvd, he was brutally beaten by Jason Ryan Verador, who approached McKinney from behind with a baseball bat. Verador took one ferocious swing, and then let McKinney topple to the ground. This act was caught on video by a nearby surveillance camera. beating.jpg Images from the surveillance camera that acptured the murder of James McKinney. Five days after the beating, McKinney died at the age of 41 due to the fatal blows he suffered on the head. What’s even more tragic is the fact that McKinney was a mentally disabled man. Luckily for the police and the public, Fidel Salcito stepped forward. Salcito drives by Wilton and Olympic daily and when he noticed Verador carrying a baseball bat, he followed him to his home and noted his address, according to the L.A.P.D. blog. Police officers began surveillance of Verado’s home and on June 13, arrested him for the murder of McKinney. The baseball bat that was used to murder McKinney was later recovered at a separate location. On June 15th, Verado who is 28, pleaded not guilty to the murder. Bail was set at $1 million and Verado is expected to reappear in court on June 27th. So far no motive has been established for the crime, nor is there evidence that Verado is a gang member. This murder occurred a little over a month after the beating of a homeless man in Florida by a 10 year old, and one week after the L.A.P.D. and Department of Homeland Security received a lawsuit for mistakenly deporting a mentally disabled man.
