Can’t sleep, I guess they call that insomnia. I am not really surprised. It has been a memorable week. I became very ill on Wednesday and went to the Emergency room that night. My appendix was removed early on Thursday. While recovering in my quiet hospital room my cell phone rang. It was 3 a.m. Friday and the caller was my brother Ron. I knew what the call was probably all about. Mom had just died. Ron and my niece Deanne were the only ones there. We have buried mom. The visitation was on Monday and as expected the “neighborhood “paid their respects. Mom spent so many years in clubs like the Business and Professional Women, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Realtors and with the AT&T Bell system. She had token visitation from those groups, but it was the friends of the family that provided the bulk of her visitors. Our house was always a safe house and haven for the many friends of her sons. Mom even used to order the great boxing matches, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, et.al. And our house seemed like a sports arena of bravado. About ten years of friends for her seven sons and it would be hard to know whose friends they were because they just became friends of the family. Mom also had four sisters with families of their own. Mom loved all of them and they also showed up well. Our cousin Tom was the mortician and as always he presented mom well. His own mother had been killed by a train when we were all still very young. Tom dedicated his life to making sure families were pleased with the way their loved ones were put to rest. His motivation was that his own mother was not so carefully presented. On Tuesday we buried mom. The day was warm and two trees surrounding her grave site were all in beautiful autumn bloom. It was a beautiful day. Now it is time to heal and restore. I have great memories of mom and have been enjoying them at the expense of sleep. I think I might just have insomnia for a long time.
