Cape Town - Gugulethu businessman Mzoli Ngcawuzele has handed CCTV footage of an armed robbery at his house to police. On Sunday night Ngcawuzele’s home in Gugulethu was stormed by eight men, some armed with handguns. The men overpowered Ngcawuzele and his wife, Phindelwa, and demanded money. Ngcawuzele is founder and owner of popular braai restaurant Mzoli’s Place in nearby Nyanga. The couple suspect they were followed from Ngcawuzele’s brother’s house, where they had dinner. One of the suspects approached and threatened Ngcawuzele as he tried to close his garage door. “Within moments we were surrounded by men with guns. ‘We have been sent to kill you, but we don’t want to do that. Just give us the money’,” they said. I agreed and we went inside where I handed over some cash. “If it was not for my wife being there, I think that I may have fought back, but I had to remain calm for fear of harm coming to her. I hit the panic button shortly after handing over the money and the attackers fled when they heard the alarm.” Some of the men had not covered their faces and Mzoli identified one of the getaway vehicles used as a Volkswagen Golf. Ngcawuzele hopes these details, with CCTV footage of the robbery, will assist police. Ngcawuzele will meet advisers in a bid to launch an independent probe. The robbery is the latest in a series of traumatic events for the Ngcawuzele family. In 2006 Ngcawuzele’s daughter, Sisanda, 20 at the time, was kidnapped, held hostage and freed by police after a three-day ordeal. A month later Ngcawuzele’s son, Unathi, 26, drowned near Strandfontein. In 2009 the Ngcawuzele family lost another son, Mandise, in a car crash on the N2 near Athlone.
