Cape Town – Minister of Transport, Ms. Dipuo Peters, will officially hand over Torch of Peace to Minister of Basic Education Ms. Angie Motshekga in the Western Cape on Thursday, 22 January 2015. The Torch of Peace has become a symbol of our country’s national campaign to combat violence against women and children. However, the Department of Transport seeks to emphasise the importance of partnership with the Department of Basic Education from the perspective of road safety. The Department wants to elevate and increase road safety awareness at schools especially the Primary schools because those are the most vulnerable road users. It also wishes to foster joint-venture awareness campaign that will be ongoing and sustainable throughout the school calendar to entrench the messages of road safety to schools. Both Ministers of Transport and Basic Education will be joined during the ceremony by Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Mr Donald Grant as well as school children from the area. The details of the handing over ceremony are as follows: Date: Thursday, 22 January 2015 Time: 11:30 – 13:00 Venue: Sithembele Matiso Secondary School, Nyanga (Cape Town) All media houses are invited to attend.
