Capitalism is a powerful tool. How we use it draws lines between malice and heroism. I dislike that welfare has become a politicized, dirty word in places. Welfare capitalism ought to be called Faring Well capitalism, because thats exactly what the child discussed in this article is doing now because of how capital was applied to benefit the human beings responsible for helping to generate it. Without examples like this, I feel the heroism is often too remote within the system for us to feel proud of the accomplishment. Were not putting on colorful tights and pulling people from burning buildings or stopping run away trains, thats for the comic books. But we are heroes nonetheless. In the real world, we have super-human (that is greater than individual human) powers with well designed systems. I think the CEO of AOL missed a great opportunity to make this very point. Everyone at that company, whether they were trying to be or not, are heroes as much as the health care professionals whose work they enabled. They saved this kids life, and returned her to her mothers loving arms as surely as a comic book hero.
