Capitals of Bhutan-- Thimpu and Punakha. Thimpu is situated in the linear Wang chhu valley. In 1961, Thimpu was officially declared as capital of Bhutan. The city has an altitude varying between 7500ft and 8500ft. The river Wang Chhu, also known as Raidak river, flows through it. Within the core area of the city, there is a mix of apartment blocks, small family homes and family owned stores. By regulation, all buildings are required to be built in traditional style with Buddhist painting and motifs. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan and seat of the Govt. until 1960 when the capital was moved to Thimpu. It is located at1200meter above sea level. It is warm in winter and hot in summer. Distances-- Phuentsholing to Thimpu-1750km approx. Thimpu to Paro- 60kms approx. Thimpu to Punakha- 80kms approx.
