Capiz highlights disaster preparedness month by Jemin B. Guillermo ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) – A series of activities have been lined up for the month-long National Disaster Consciousness Month celebration in Capiz. “We have prepared various activities for this celebration this month to make the Capiceños and the province of Capiz a stronger, safer and resilient, said Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Esperedion Pelaez said. Pelaez disclosed that the two-day photo exhibit and rescue equipment display at the Capiz National High School Gymnasium last June 1 and 2 had somehow provided inputs to students and other stakeholders of the readiness in terms of training and availability of equipments of the various agencies in times of disaster. He said a Disaster Awareness Run was conducted last July 5 which was participated in by various sectors to include the schools, government agencies, non-government, civic and volunteer groups. “We had also be gathered some 400 Grades 3 to 8 students of Inzo Arnaldo Village Integrated School in Roxas City last July 7 for the 1st Disaster Awareness Camp for Kids where we inculcated in the minds of children the importance of disaster preparedness through lectures, drill and games,” he said. Pelaez also said that all the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responders in Capiz will also gather on July 12 to familiarize and learn from each other as well as for some lectures on the Incidence Command System. He added that part of this year’s activities for the celebration will be the PDRRM Council Rescue Olympics on July 26 at the Villareal Stadium which will be participated in by the various rescue groups in Capiz. “The culminating activity dubbed as Pagpasalamat 2014 will be held on July 31 at the Hall of Governors,” he said. This year’s National Disaster Consciousness Month, which kicked off with a mass and a motorcade around the major streets in Roxas City, has a theme “Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan, Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran.”
