Capt. Amarinder dismayed over Modi’s indifference towards drug menace, cold response to his letter Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today expressed dismay over the total indifference of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards the serious issue of drug addiction in the country, particularly Punjab. The Congress leader disclosed that he had written to the Prime Minister on June 30 last flagging for his attention the serious problem of drug addiction that was afflicting the youth in most parts of the country and Punjab in particular. He said, he had urged the PM to initiate measures for formulating a National Drug Policy as the problem of drug peddling and smuggling was interstate and it was beyond the scope of an individual state to tackle it. However, Capt Amarinder disclosed, he was dismayed and disappointed over the PM’s cold response, which merely acknowledged the receipt of the letter without making any mention whether his government was taking any note of it and pursuing any follow up action. He said, the PM’s letter merely said, “I have received your letter of 30 June, 2014 regarding the problem of drug addiction in Punjab”. The former Chief Minister remarked, “I appreciate Mr Modi’s courtesy in acknowledging my letter, but it would have been better if he would have said something about whether the issue was being considered by his government or not”. This only reflects either the government’s lack of understanding of a serious matter or its lack of sincerity and seriousness in tackling the drug menace in the country. He reminded Modi that he should be remembering that during the Chief Minister’s conferences between 2002 and 2007, which both of them attended together, he (Capt Amarinder) had continuously raised the issue and sought a National Drug Policy to tackle the problem. “However, unfortunately Mr Modi appears to have short memory and not much time also to consider an issue that is devastatingly threatening an entire generation of Punjabis today and may threaten the entire nation tomorrow”, he regretted.
