Captain America - the Winter soldier movie review (spoiler free): let me preface this by saying that I havent been a big fan of the Marvel movies so far with the exception of the first Captain America and Iron Man 1. I can certainly admire the effort theyve put into bringing their heroes to the screen and the talented people whove made it happen, but Ive always been more into characters than costumes and Marvels attempt to split the difference has left me a little indifferent. The Winter Solider is all about Steve Rogers ongoing struggle to find a sense of place in the modern world. Hes become a living icon which makes it difficult for him to just be an ordinary person when his heroic baggage is always weighing him down. Theres no way for him to escape public recognition or develop friendships outside of work or even live in a modest apartment with a potential love interest next door. This sense of sadness and isolation is magnified when a global scale conspiracy theory blows up into some very public acts of terrorism and he has to save his friends while running from the very organization he swore to uphold and protect. I dont want to say much more about the plot because its actually well-written and theres some great twists and turns, so lets see... The cast is great and the big action pieces (which are impressive) are balanced nicely with quieter moments where we learn more about the characters. Im going to have to credit the Russo brothers who directed the movie with a lot of the same attention to character detail that theyve shown in Arrested Development and Community. Who knew that a couple of comedy guys could create a big action spectacle? The Winter Solider is an enjoyable parfait of layers from other movies: theres some Minority Report, plenty of Three Days of the Condor, and some bittersweet remnants from the first Captain America movie sprinkled on top. This is definitely tied with Iron Man 1 for my favorite superhero movie!
