Captain Benjamin Newton 1/6th Battalion, The North Staffordshire Regiment (Territorial Force) Benjamin Newton was born on 23 July 1890 at Burton-upon-Trent and lived at The Cliffe at Tutbury. He was educated at Burton Grammar School and was later employed as a manager at his family’s cement and plaster works. He was commissioned as a Second-Lieutenant in the 6th North Staffords on 7 March 1911. On the mobilisation of the battalion in August 1914, Newton was appointed as Signalling Officer, being promoted to Lieutenant on 22 August. He was appointed Temporary Captain on 25 July 1915. Newton was severely wounded during the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 13 October 1915, suffering a gun shot wound to the right shoulder. He was evacuated to No. 7 Stationary Hospital at Boulogne where the head of his right humerus was removed. He was eventually evacuated to England on 6 December 1915 from Boulogne on board the “Bristol”, arriving at Dover the following day. From there he was sent to Lady Ridley‘s Hospital in London. After a period of leave lasting from 15 December 1915 to 14 March 1916, Newton returned to light duties as his wound prevented him from using his right arm. Captain Newton served at home for the remainder of the war, being posted to an Officer Cadet Battalion in 1918 before being transferred to the Territorial Force Reserve in April 1919. He later served with the Defence Force, being commissioned Lieutenant on 9 April 1921 and was appointed Temporary Captain on 16 April before he relinquished his commission on 6 July. By this time Newton was residing at “The Cottage” at Tutbury.
