Captain George Mainwaringplayed by Arthur Lowe (1915-1982) George Mainwaring (pronounced Mannering) is the manager of the Swallow Bank at Walmington-on-Sea. He is held in very high esteem, especially by himself. He received his education at Eastbournes grammar school and had to struggle his whole life to become a bank manager. He stands very firmly on his authority, which is not easy as his chief clerk, Arthur Wilson, comes from a rather better social environment. When he formed the local Home Guard platoon in 1940, he immediately appointed himself to the rank of captain, as he believes he is a born leader. This vision is not shared by the rest of the platoon, except for Lance Corporal Jones, who will do anything to get into Captain Mainwarings good books. He is married to Elizabeth, who we never get to see as she hasnt been outside since the war started, except to play Lady Godiva (dressed in fleshings) in a town parade without informing her shocked husband. Mr Mainwaring always insists that he has a very happy marriage. This, however, is doubtful when considering the nature of his many phone calls with his wife, who has a tendency to slam the phone down... Likes: discipline in the platoon Dislikes: disobedience in the platoon, public schools, Germans Hobbies: bossing people, holding parades, marching through the town hoping someone will salute him Catchphrases: I wondered whod be the first one to spot that, (to Private Pike) Stupid boy!, (to Lance Corporal Jones) I think youre getting into the realms of phantasy now, (to Private Frazer) Stop rolling your eyes, Frazer! Nickname: Napoleon (by ARP Chief Warden Hodges)
