Captains Log Stardate 4/25/2014 When did you first see behind the curtain? Get knocked back by the crumbling differences between a world full of magic and a world where the only magic to be had is the kindness, acts of free will, strength and tenderness we pull from inside ourselves? For me: Spring Carnival Mitchell Elementary 6th grade. Mom was the fortune teller and she played it to the hilt - her costume was amazing, her jewels looked real, she was rocking the Rhoda headband and long hippie dress and when it was my turn she passed me over to the other Mom because she said it was bad luck to have your future told by a family member. The other mom was equally stunning and knew how to work up a fortune that didnt scare you but was exciting nontheless. I loved everything about that moment. The candles and props and persian rug and the perfumes of both women mingling with the incense and carnvial popcorn and snowcone taste in my mouth. Later, when I ran back to the tent to drop off some prizes with my Mom, I caught the other mother in an inappropriate embrace with someone that was not her husband. I couldnt write it off as my mistake or a trick of the eyes because I knew the school employee who had his hand on her ass. I ran out and saw my own mom coming back from the bathroom inside the school. I stumbled away... trying sort this out and when I couldnt I wished that something bad would make it so they couldnt do that together any more... I just wanted the magic and security of the world I had before... it was then that a group of parents came storming up to the tent. I immediately thought they were there to fix what Id seen, but it was because the moms child had gotten hurt on the monkey bars. I thought the school employee might have met my eyes for a second as he helped walk the boy to the parents car to drive to the hospital. I know he hadnt seen me in the tent, but she had. Still, his face was full of resignation and sadness, whether for the boy, the Mom or because this was probably the end of where anything was headed between them. Later, I thought my wishing had made the boy fall and break his arm, but mostly I knew it wasnt that because that was magical thinking, which Id left back in the tent.
