Captive American photojournalist Luke Somers and a South African hostage were killed in a failed effort by US Special Forces to rescue them from al-Qaida militants in Yemen on Friday, even as the Pakistan military nailed a high-value terrorist fugitive in South Waziristan following the pledge its army chief made during a recent visit to Washington. The two hostages were shot by their al-Qaida captors in course of a raid by a US commando team in a village in Yemen, the second such rescue attempt. A wounded Somers died while being transported to a US naval ship in the region; the South African aid worker hostage who died was identified as Pierre Korkie. Two al-Qaida jihadis and eight civilians are reported to have died in the raid.
