Car Thieves Caught in the Act … In the past several months older model Honda’s have been the target of car thieves. Yesterday at noon the Springfield Police Department received a 9-1-1 call that suspicious activity was taking place on the end of Randall Place. Officers Ariel Toledo and Jose Aponte responded right away and spotted two suspicious looking characters with a red Honda Civic jacked up as they were taking tires with rims off the car. The two master mind criminals looked nervous but had nowhere to run. The officers called for back-up and Officers Craig Staples , Bobby Brown and Louis Rosario quickly responded. The officers questioned the pair of car thieves about the car they were in the process of dismantling. One of the suspects stated that he just purchased the car from somebody on “Craigslist” and that he was taking the tires off of it to put on his Honda. Everything was true but the “Craigslist” part … the officers checked the plate number and it turns out that these guys just stole the car in Enfield Connecticut and hour earlier. One of the suspects had Burglarious Instruments in his pocket. The pair of car thieves were quickly handcuffed and brought to lock up. Arrested was … 1) Jonathan Torres age 20 of 24 Dickinson Street, Springfield 2) Jose Alicea age 21 of 72 Malden Street, Springfield … charges … a) Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle b) Taking Stolen Motor Vehicles Auto Parts c) Possession of Burglarious Instruments The pair of car thieves are still in lock up pending their arraignment in Springfield District Court on Monday morning. The Auto Theft Detectives are now looking into these gentlemen in regards to others Honda’s stolen in Western MA this past month. Commissioner John Barbieri has tasked the Auto Theft Detectives to investigate the recent spike in these types of car thefts. The public who own older model Honda’s should take extra precaution in locking and alarming their cars to avoid theft. This was a great arrest because a private citizen spotted something that didn’t look just right and called 911 to have the police investigate. That one phone call could possibly end a current Honda theft ring. Great job!!! Pictures enclosed of the thieves and the crime scene. Sgt.
